Why I’m Being Charged $252 to Access My Own Case
🧠 “We’ve searched high and low… and unfortunately, our own integrity doesn’t seem to be well-organized. That’ll be $252, please.”

On 11 November 2025, I received a letter from RMIT’s FOI Office stating that in order to access internal documentation about how my own research integrity case was handled (Case Ref 2025.13), I’d need to pay a deposit of $126 toward an estimated $252 total cost. Why? Because it will apparently take them 10 hours to search their systems for messages, notes, or records.
Let’s break this down:
These are communications about me, by staff who handled my case.
These records are meant to be retained properly, under institutional protocol.
And now, I have to fund the university’s incompetence in order to access them.
I call this the “Integrity Retrieval Fee.”
But really, this isn’t just about me.
This is about how universities are now gatekeeping transparency, turning requests for due process into bureaucratic tollbooths.
The “Mock” Invoice
Here’s what it might look like, if I sent them a bill:
Welcome to the Bureaucratic Time Loop.
According to the FOI gods, the 30-day processing period doesn’t begin when you submit your request. No, it starts once you’ve paid their ransom—sorry, I mean “deposit.”
In my case, that means the university had ample time to stall, delay, ignore, and waffle… and now that they’ve decided they might possibly start looking at the integrity notes, they want $252 upfront and a fresh 30 days to find their own files.
Imagine hiring someone to clean your own house, only to have them say:
“Thanks for the request. Please pay us to check whether we ever owned a mop. Then give us another month to locate the broom.”
Institutions don’t run on logic. They run on clocks, power, and delay tactics.

As a performance intervention, I’m considering launching a mock crowdfund campaign:

Because apparently, that’s what accountability costs these days.

इस तीखे लेकिन व्यंग्यात्मक लेख में लेखक यह दिखाती हैं कि कैसे एक विश्वविद्यालय एक छात्र से उसी काम के लिए शुल्क मांग रहा है जिसे उसने खुद बनाया है — केवल यह जानने के लिए कि उसके साथ क्या किया गया।
FOI (सूचना की स्वतंत्रता) अनुरोध का जवाब देने के नाम पर, विश्वविद्यालय ने 10 घंटे की “सर्च फीस” मांगी है — यह दर्शाने के लिए कि पारदर्शिता यहां एक विलासिता है, न कि अधिकार।
